ANNAPOLIS, Md. - YouTube can get anybody a little added attention, and that includes Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot.
Franchot is trying to convince Maryland residents to eFile their taxes, so he took to the web. Below you’ll find the latest in the effort to cut down on the state’s load of paper filings.
Maryland is hiring only half the help it usually has to go through the mountains of paperwork. eFiling will make that easier, and help you get your refund a little faster.
The state says the YouTube video will be followed with advertising in local papers, displays in government buildings, and other things aimed at getting as many Marylanders to efile as possible.
For tax year 2007, the Comptrollers office processed more than 1.5 million returns electronically, up almost 200,000 from the 1.3 million received in tax year 2006. To date, for tax year 2008, the office has already downloaded 96,930 electronic returns. This compared to 82,871 downloaded this same time last year.
Paper returns cost the state $1.98 to process, compared to .38 cents for e-filed returns.
Since its inception in the early 1990s, electronic filing has saved the state roughly $14 million.
