If you watched the end of the Super Bowl and saw Santonio Holmes get the MVP award, you may have asked yourself, “Where was the car that usually goes along with the trophy?”
Holmes did get his car — an $85,000 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum — but it was given to him in private, according to the New York Daily News.
Breaking from tradition, General Motors decided to keep a low profile after receiving money from the recent federal bailout, and didn’t have a Cadillac on the field or in the hotel ballroom for Monday’s MVP news conference.
“We made the decision not to actively participate in the Super Bowl. We congratulate the MVP, it is a great achievement. We are very sensitive to the federal assistance loan we have received and we want to carry on our fiduciary responsibility. The Super Bowl was not a place for us to be this year,” Cadillac spokeswoman Joanne Krell told the Daily News.
The MVP of the Super Bowl gets to choose the vehicle he wants. Holmes is the sixth winner in the last eight years to choose a Cadillac.
