Washington, DC  –

Uncertainty still reigns king as the preparations for President Elect Barack Obama’s inaugural ceremonies and parade continue.

DC resident Andrew Williams said, “the most asked question is; ‘how am I going to get there?’

Williams and other eager parade goers feel like they are meeting at the intersection of frustration and anticipation as they try to figure it out. Still, Williams says, “I wouldn’t miss it for the world, but I think there is a lot of uncertainty about what roads will be closed and access points to the parade.”

It ran pretty smooth at past inaugural parades. DC City council members warn you should be thru the security check points by 9 in the morning.

Kate Murray thinks she can get there, but wonders, “Once I’m at the parade can I get from one side of the street to the other to see my friends?”

The Secret Service says yes, but only at these locations:

3rd Street between Constitution and Pennsylvania…
Pennsylvania between 6th and 7th
and Pennsylvania between 11th and 12th.

With all the ‘no parking’ alerts and some neighborhoods’ parking restrictions, Emily Gillen worries about all the out-of-towners. She said, “It will be crowded and there will be people lost and confused.

DDOT says drivers allowed into those areas will need proof of your address and will have to go through one of six vehicle screening checkpoints between sixth and 14th streets.  They are:

6th Street NW at Indiana Avenue, NW
8th Street, NW at F Street, NW
13th Street, NW at I Street, NW
E Street, NW at 18th Street, NW
14th Street, NW North Of Independence Avenue, SW
Independence Ave, SW East Of 14th Street, SW
From Inauguration.DC.gov

All of it leaves some like Gillen asking, “Would it be better if I just walked?” If so, there will be several streets open only to pedestrians

Those are:

6th Street from P to K Streets
13th Street from Logan Circle to K Street
Massachusetts Avenue to East Capitol Street
and from Virginia across the Arlington Memorial to Lincoln Circle on to Henry Bacon Drive.

Many others are calculating their options like riding a bike. It is a good option. The city says bicycles will be allowed across the bridges into the District.

There are two free bike valets you can park at 16th street between “eye” and “k” or the jefferson memorial parking lot

If you are disabled, there are two drop-off points at South Capitol Street and E Street and North Capital Street at E street.

The U.S. Capitol Police will run accessible golf carts to the parade route.
