The ball dropped in New York’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve will be a little more green this year.

According to the New York Times, the glowing ball has been doubled in size to 12 feet in diameter and will feature over 32,000 L.E.D. lights. L.E.D. lights use a fraction of the power of traditional incandescent lightbulbs and were used for the first time last year for the 100th anniversary of the ball-dropping.

Philips, the electronic company who is outfitting the giant sphere with the lights, says the ball will use the same amount of energy per hour as two conventional home ovens.

It seems going green is a big theme for New Year’s Eve. In Sydney, Australia, the Australian newspaper reports that all of the fireworks will undergo a carbon audit and will be offset by the purchase of carbon credits. And in Times Square, it won’t just be the glowing ball that gets a makeover. The Coca-Cola sign will be powered by wind and display a new message on Dec. 31 that says “Refresh. Recycle. Repeat,” according to AdWeek.
