Leaving a Haze of Smoke

The masterminds behind Superbad and Knocked Up are back with an all new motion picture that totally disregards all of society’s morals and values. Pineapple Express, which stars James Franco from the Spiderman Franchise and Seth Rogen from Knocked Up, is a film that contains crude sexual humor and over-the-top action that will leave you blushing, laughing, and nodding your head all at the same time!

Pineapple Express centers on the controversial life of Dale Denton (Seth Rogen). Denton, who is a court subpoena distributor, dates an 18-year-old high school female, and during his spare time, likes to use an illegal drug that some people try to grow in their backyard. To make things worse, Saul Silver (James Franco), Denton’s drug dealer, introduces him to a more powerful substance named after a fruit. At this point, you begin to think that this is just a drug infested film that intends to relay the message that getting high is fun! However, the filmmakers must have foreseen this message because for the rest of the movie, the elements of drama and action are added into the mix.

While lighting up in his car, Denton witnesses a murder! Traumatized by what he has just seen, Denton makes a grave mistake that will cause him and his drug supplier, Silver, much turmoil. To give you a hint, Denton’s mistake has everything to do with a certain substance that he leaves behind at the crime scene. Plus, the victim’s murderers, yes there are two, are key power players within the illegal drug trade!

Once everything is fully exposed, Denton and Silver are in the fight for their lives! Be prepared to witness ridiculous car cashes, extreme street fighting, blazing pyrotechnics, and unique, yet, sometimes over used dialogue. For what it’s worth, James Franco does portray a not so there (ditzy) drug dealer very well; while Seth Rogen surprisingly pulls off the hero image during the climatic ending of Pineapple Express.

Overall Grade: C+

***Pineapple Express opened in second place with $22.4 million. The Dark Knight still remains number one at the box office, pulling in $26 million. Since its opening weekend, The Dark Knight has pulled in $441.5 million.

*On the record, I do not condone illegal drug use of any kind!
