Prince Georges County Considers Turning Commercial Space Into ‘Medical Malls’

July 29th, 2008 · No Comments

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — Prince George’s County officials are reviewing a proposal to house medical facilities in old shopping centers.

The plan calls for creating “medical malls” — places where people could go shopping and receive medical treatment in the same complex.

A report presented to the County Council recommends renovating or building at four locations: the former Landover Mall, Iverson Mall in Temple Hills, Forestville Plaza and Landover Crossing. The sites were chosen based on their size, vacancy rates and unstable tenant base.

Under the proposal, the malls would contain various health-related centers, including diagnostic testing areas, pharmacies, rehabilitation clinics and dental offices.

The county would have to partner with private investors to pay for the project.

Backers of the plan say it would make health care services more accessible to underserved areas, and also create jobs.
