Trouble at polling places could impact election results

October 21st, 2008 by Monique Caradine

Early voters in the state of Florida are reporting serious problems at polling places.  Among other things, voters report incredibly long lines with waits of up to 3 hours.  There have also been consistent reports of voting machines breaking down.  Additionally people attempting to cast their vote for Obama are reporting that the machines are instead registering their votes for McCain.

For persistent voters, the problems with machines are being easily fixed.  But what about those not-so-persistent voters, already frustrated by having to wait in long lines?  Will they wind up just giving up and letting their vote go to McCain?  Will people be discouraged by the process and forego voting all together?

Given these problems, despite the fact that voting is one of the most sacred and important American rights we have, do you think there is an effort to manipulate the outcome of this historic election?

I think it could be discouraging, but given the importance of the issue, what is it to wait in a long line if your vote can help correct your economic situation? Which would you choose? Long line, or your job being downsized (or your company’s profits being in the red) because of an even worsening economy?

    I’d pick the long line…
